Sesimbra sits on Portugal's Atlantic coast, 30 minutes south of Lisbon airport. Praia das Bicas, Praia do Meco, Praia de Fonte de Telha, Cabo Espichel and the Arrábida heights — over a dozen launches packed into a 30-kilometre radius, covering every wind direction from northwest through south to southeast.
Sesimbra also has its own microclimate — drier and sunnier than Lisbon on most days. Where the city catches Atlantic cloud, Sesimbra often sits in clear, flyable air. More reliably good days than anywhere else within reach of a major European hub.

Coastal soaring season
Coastal soaring around Sesimbra is most reliable from September to July; August, the month of summer heat waves, is the least reliable. With dozens of flying sites, Behrooz picks the best each day, and mild winters draw pilots from northern Europe.
Cross-country season
Seven months of thermals across inland Portugal — the Alentejo plains, central Portugal and the north. Spring brings high cloudbase and long distance days, autumn strong, punchy climbs, and Behrooz chooses the region each day by the forecast.

Most pilot trips lock their dates six months ahead and fly whatever week they land on. We do it differently.
Because Behrooz lives here year-round, you don't need to commit far in advance. You can decide your week one or two weeks before — sometimes a few days, occasionally the day before — when the forecast shows where the air will be working best. When the wind window shifts mid-trip, we move with it: a dozen-plus flying sites around Sesimbra alone give us room to work with, plus the inland thermal sites, or across the border into Andalusia when the air there is working. Somewhere on the Iberian peninsula, the air is almost always doing something. The plan is to fly, not to stick to a schedule.

A practical tip on accommodation: hold off on hotel reservations until the trip is confirmed. Sesimbra has plenty of pensions and small hotels with same-week availability — Behrooz will point you to three or four reliable options when the dates lock. The pilots who fly the most days are the ones who didn't book the hotel six months ago.
Flying in Portugal follows the same international right-of-way rules you already trained on. The practical checklist for visiting pilots is short:
DHV, SHV, FFVL, BHPA, USHPA — whichever national rating you fly under at home. From A-licence with a confident reverse start upwards. An FAI IPPI Card alongside your licence is welcome but not strictly required for licensed pilots flying privately.
Third-party liability cover valid for Portugal — standard federation policies (DHV, SHV, FFVL etc.) usually include it. Bring your policy card on the first day.
Your wing, harness, helmet and reserve. The principle: you fly the equipment you trained on. If you need gear, rentals — paragliders, and parakites for the Parakite Week — can be arranged at extra cost. Radios can be provided free. Just let us know what you need when you book.
Some Portuguese flying sites carry seasonal restrictions, especially through the summer holidays. Behrooz lives here year-round and knows exactly which site is open when, where the wind window sits today, and where the weather is breaking. You don't need to figure that out — that's the guiding you're paying for.
Yes, for all flying programmes — from A-licence (with a confident reverse launch) upwards. Your home-country licence is accepted (DHV, SHV, FFVL, BHPA, USHPA and equivalents); you don't need a Portuguese licence. Tandem flights need no licence or experience.
You can fly in Portugal every month of the year. Coastal soaring is possible year-round: September to July is the most reliable period, with the most consistent Atlantic wind, while August, the month of summer heat waves, is the least reliable. The cross-country (XC) thermal season runs from April to October. Portugal's mild winters are especially popular with pilots from northern Europe whose home sites are grounded.
Sesimbra is 30 minutes by car from Lisbon Airport (LIS), which has direct flights from across Europe and beyond. Most pilots land and are in the air the same afternoon.
Every flying day includes a weather and site briefing, harness check, a radio, in-flight coaching, launch and ground-handling practice, photos and video, and an evening track-log review. Private transfers to and from the launch are included every day, plus outlanding retrieval on XC days.
